You don't get over them by Clelius You don't get over them by Clelius
Is it just me, or it looks like some people just consider mental disorders as something only children/kids/teenagers have? I've heard people say you can "get over them" when you become an adult. Utter bullshit. Then why my 33-year-old brother still has LFA? Why my father still has Asperger's? Why there are a lot of adults with mental disorders that no one considers as "really affected"?
I noticed that the media focus a lot on children and teens with mental disorders. You can find a lot of books or films whose main character has a mental disorder. I noticed that most of those characters are children or teens. Very rarely they are adults. Why this? Why don't we focus on adults with problems as well? They need help, too. It's not like you "get over it". If you happen to be born with a mental disorder you are going to have them all your fucking life. There's no way you're going to completely "get over" it. This doesn't mean you will never be able to live an happy or productive life, but still you are a person with a disorder, maybe married and with kids, but still a person with a disorder.
Like my father: he is married, has two kids and a job, but still he has, let's call them, quirks, typical of ADD and Asperger's. When he was a kid they didn't diagnose much, he was only told by some psychiatrists that he had Asperger's, and that he is schizoid by others, but he was never properly tested nor diagnosed.

Yeah. I've had schizoid personality disorder for as long as I can remember; people felt like it was just child imaginary play when I was younger, and people act like I've gotten over it because I'm older, now.
And I do feel like media makes it seem like teens & children are the only people who suffer from mental illnesses.

Your stamp basically says something that should be obvious. Too bad that it isn't for the most of the mankind.

So true. I'm 24 and I've had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome in my teens. I hate my disorder to this day still, why? Well maybe as an adult I'm expected to "grow up" in order to get a job and buy a house. No, I can't just 'grow up", I'm trying. It's hard to get employed or be out on our own when you're either autistic or have Asperger's. It's hard for me to try to do things without my parents paying for everything for me and reminding me they're going to die one day and I'm gonna be on my own broke once they do. Sometimes I'm scared for when I marry my fiancÚ, would our kids have a disorder worse than mine? :tears:

Yeah, I have that fear as well. I also have a brother with LFA, so I could have kids with with severe autism as well. This is why I'd rather adopt if I'm ever going to have kids.
I have that job and living on my own fear as well but I think that heh, if my father who was born with a severe form of autism that then turned into AS was able to "make it" I could as well. Also there are jobs you can do in your own house and gain money from them, like a translator. That's what I'd want to be.
